M27, also known as the Dumbell Nebula, offers a glimpse of what will happen to our Sun in five billion years.

At the end of their life, stars of low mass (less than 8 solar masses) expel their outer gas envelope. Their core collapses to form a white dwarf, an extremely dense star: the size of the Earth, but a mass comparable to that of the Sun. The intense ultraviolet radiation of this white dwarf ionizes the expelled layers, which then begin to shine.
