The Rosette Nebula is a star nursery that is home to NGC 2244, an open cluster of bright young stars.
Their stellar winds blow a hole in the center of the nebula, a 50-year-old hole in diameter.

This image captures only a part of it to be able to examine more closely the central cluster and especially the dark dust towers that surround it. These structures are cometary globules and Bok blood cells, named after astronomer Bart Bok.
They testify to the presence of stars in formation in the nebula: these dense areas are due to collapse gravitational of the cloud, and protect the surrounding gas from the intense stellar wind of the stars of the cluster.
